The new Facebook 2020. How it looks and works?

Four major changes have been made to Facebook’s history. The latest, FB5, also known as New Facebook, maybe the most dramatic of all. It’s a total change in how Facebook looks and works on computers and mobile devices.

Do not give up. It has been many years since a significant change of appearance appeared on Facebook, so this message is both welcome and much needed. So what can we expect?

What is New Facebook?

Social network plans were announced at the F8 2019 conference, including the redesign of Facebook. The new Facebook is an interface update that places more emphasis on Groups and Events – the two biggest reasons people visit Facebook every day. It also means that the news feed will be less available on New Facebook.

Both the desktop page and the mobile application will automatically receive this update. It aims to facilitate navigation on Facebook while modernizing the appearance of Facebook for the new decade. Until now, few have access to New Facebook.

When will New Facebook be available?

It is not possible to activate the update, you have to wait for Facebook to invite you to test the new look. The announcement took place in April 2019. In November 2019, the first people in the USA were invited to the tests, then Canada, United Kingdom. There are still no updates for users, Facebook said they plan to offer a new look in a wider range in spring 2020.

“A small percentage” of people who can access new features on Facebook will see a pop-up window after logging in with an invitation to test New Facebook.

Facebook Design 2020

The Facebook you know will soon become a thing of the past. We found ourselves in a group of users selected by Facebook who was given the new Facebook look.

In general, the site looks more minimalistic than the current version and contains more white space. Top of page is no longer blue. Instead, it is white and divided into three sections. The left one is the Facebook icon pointing to the news feed and search field. The middle section contains light grey icons: your news feed, video centre (watch), the marketplace, groups and gaming. The right section is the feedback button and reporting problems with New Facebook (probably it will disappear in the final version), then Messenger and your profile icon.

It is worth paying attention to the new Facebook logo. There used to be f in a blue or white square. Now the letter f is larger and has a lighter blue circle.

Facebook Stories are highlighted in the centre in the form of rectangles, as in the mobile application. Just as reports have caught up on Instagram and sweep, so on Facebook they are probably not very popular.

Profile on the new Facebook

The appearance of the profile on the new Facebook has also been modified, however, the profile page most closely resembles the look of the old Facebook we are used to

New Facebook Post

Very intuitive and modern. After clicking “What’s on your mind?” a new post a window appears. The first checkbox is the audience, then the post content. The bottom bar brings some news. You will find, among others, various fonts and backgrounds. Of course, classic options for inserting photos, gifs, tagging people and places, or emotions are available. See for yourself in the video below.

New Facebook – adding a post

New look for Facebook notifications

In the header on the right, we have a section for notifications, messages and profile options. A complete transformation of all functions. Notifications and messages open in the column, also profile options. It looks modern, and most importantly, it’s transparent.

Message windows on new Facebook

An interesting way of presenting current (open) conversations on Messenger. Old Facebook opened them in the bar at the bottom of the page. The mess was getting rather fast on small screen resolutions. The new Facebook design has active messages hidden under thumbnails on the right. To start a chat, simply click the plus icon in the bottom right corner of the browser.

Facebook Dark Mode

The long-awaited Facebook Dark Mode is available at one click. The classic light version will change into a snap into dark mode, which will be a good option when watching videos or Facebook Live.

Other features for the new Facebook

Facebook has announced several new features for events and specific social groups (Gaming Chat and Gaming Stream). Interactions for Facebook Live will also be improved, especially for people who use it for sales purposes. Has a great webinar tool been created?

Above, we briefly introduced you to the new look of Facebook for 2020. We are interested in your opinion, reaction … which functions did you like and which you are not convinced of? Or maybe you already have access to the new Facebook? Write your first impressions in the comment below.

  1. Where is News Feed Most Recent? Who wants to see a two day old story first? I don’t. I want the newest stuff first. It does not make any sense for old stories to be at top.

  2. “The new Facebook is an interface update that places more emphasis on Groups and Events – the two biggest reasons people visit Facebook every day. It also means that the news feed will be less available on New Facebook.”
This part doesn’t sound good to me. I mainly want to see news and updates from friends . Guess I’ll have to wait and see how the “new FB” looks and feels…

  3. I completely HATE this new look. To me it isn’t cohesive it’s all over the place and I am not getting an option to switch back to the classic look. This new look gives me a headache and reminds me of the last days of MySpace specially when you switch to the dark mode. THE NEW LOOK SUCKS!

    • New look is awful! Keep it simple and the way it was – so easy to move around and visit various sites. It wasn’t “broke” so don’t fix it.

  4. My feed is narrow and manymposts are not comp, etely visible. Sides are cut off. Maybe this works on a phone, but not on my android tablet

  5. I think I tried a version last year but it seemed to have broken Notes, so I reverted back again. I think Notes are important and I would like them added to the Data Download again, as they used to be included up to 2012.

  6. Don’t seem to be able to tag or link people when adding photos to existing albums via my Mac (still works fine in the old format on phone/ipad). Hope this isn’t a consistent issue when loading new photos because I don’t have the time to go in and do it after posting.

  7. Facebook just moved my movie fan open-to-the-public site into their new template. it was a shock and I will admit it does look nice….but my Timeline composition puts that column far over to the right of my screen and after awhile my neck gets stiff from constantly craning it in that position while composing. Is there any way I can move it more towards the middle by removing the stats column?. (The viewer sees it that way, thank heavens).

  8. Notifications: On old FB, they allowed you to “Mark all as read.” Is this feature available in the update? Thanks for the article. It was helpful!

  9. I can’t figure out how to create a group under my business page. It only allows me to do it as my personal page being the admin and not even allowing me to add my business page to the group. I also do not see how to add applications to a group, like Cinchshare. Has anyone figured out how to navigate this? I do Direct Sales and use the group pages a lot with my business page.

  10. Will there be an option to ‘dark mode?” This change will decrease my time on FB, where my main interests are the news feed and friend comments. They’ve just hired some new techies who think quality = new and more. People are getting tired of it I think.

  11. I hate it. The sidebars make me crazy. Can you close the stupid notification panel when you don’t want it? Groups and events are not what I want Facebook for – I want to see my real friends. I’ll definitely be leaving a lot of groups if that is the priority.

  12. It doesn’t look at all appealing to me. I have a friend who had the new version and said it’s very difficult on the eyes. I think a lot of people will be leaving Facebook if they’re unable to keep the old version

  13. Despise it. First off, it was not minimalistic, it was loud and in your face. It is now harder for me to access my pages, which is my work. Instead of clicking at the arrow on the top, I had to go to the new feed section. I constantly use my newsfeed, which includes seeing what my fiends are up too. If I’m not seeing enough of a group, I’ll go to the damn group! I also don’t care for a blip of a, “story.” When I was using my page and posted something, I couldn’t transfer it to an album, it was just stuck on the wall. It also wasn’t easy in the slightest bit to navigate.
As the old adage goes, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it.”

  14. I never use Events. My Share is sometimes Friends, public or specific friends. See no way to switch. Post???????? If I click Share just want to do that, not write anything…Changes seem to benefit only a few. I am going to miss FB because I cannot figure out how to use, if you aren’t computer savvy it’s frustrating. Making this change during a pandemic is just adding to the stress if getting through the day.

  15. I’m told the old facebook format will disappear in September. In the new format, my business page has lost the “Our Story” section of picture and text in the About section. Does anyone know how I can get that back? thanks

  16. It’s a complete dumpster fire. Who in the world over there is telling them this is any better? Clearly something in the culture isn’t allowing people to say it’s bad.

  17. What hubris! Forcing a change form a format that many people loved and into a design that is confused and difficult. I do not go to Facebook for news. I do not want all this extra stuff. I just want to see what my friends are doing and stay in touch. Sept 1 — Time to use a different platform.

  18. I don’t know if it just a glych on my system, but every time I try to react to a friends post the post just disappears. It happens as soon as II hover over “like” to choose the response I want. The item just vanishes and a now one takes it’s place. AAAAH!

  19. I’ve really tried to give it a fair shake. I manage a musician and first Covid took away and forced the cancellation of a years worth of bookings. Now he does FB Live videos, and I was able to simply invite people while he was live. Now I don’t see how to do that. Googling doesn’t seem to get me many answers. There is no help available. If I google I’m getting “old” FB information. waa waa waa…. I’m an old dog that is struggling with these new tricks. I’ll keep at it, but refuse to ask a teenager. PLUS WHY games? don’t we spend enough time of that social media?

  20. More scrolling, more clicking, headache-inducing pages with no open spaces. What’s not to hate?

  21. Anybody any info on NOTEs on facebook? Are they removed completely in the new design? I can’t find the button to create a new note.

  22. Facebook: If ain’t broke don’t fix it. that’s SO not their motto. Where the heck did my ability to add Units to a group disappear to.

  23. new facebook SUCKS… stupid and will make people finally give up.. they change stuff for no reason and despite what geeks say they make it harder to use

  24. Just a regular user and not a business and can’t find the feed options you could choose on a page you have liked so you could see it first…etc that is gone?? Or where is it? and the text animations are gone.. like Congrats or Best Wishes… where are they? It has been a few hours with the new format and the experience feels diminished not better…

  25. You just can’t do this to us. Especially now, our lives are so unstable, so terrible that throwing this chaos into it will be unbearable. Extend the Classic option for at least 6 months or keep the option always, it will serve you as an indication of what your market wants. We are trying to do political business with Facebook, an election… stay connected, stay in touch and try to stay safe with it and the news feed is essential to that. This is no time to lock us out of what’s familiar and reliable, 2020 is cursed enough already. Please, we are begging you. Designing for the frivolity of teens and twenty somethings will leave the rest of us out and disenchanted. You will lose money doing this. If you want something to please young people, just start another Facebook and make billions more dollars. The main problem with Facebook is that you have no competition.

  26. The “Home” section on the left is gone! My screen looks like a Mobile screen ..Is there another Social Media platform?? I do use LinkedIn.. I’m ready to switch!

  27. On a desktop computer the new Facebook looks horrid. Can not see anything that is better – it makes a normal looking experience look like someone blew up a phone app on a desktop. They really need to re-think this stupid and bad move.

  28. I am trying to figure out how to download a photo that someone has shared on the new Facebook. On the old version there were options but now I can’t find them. I don’t just want to save them on Facebook.

  29. NEW version is just AWFUL. But every 2 days, they insist on forcing it back on me. I give them feedback for their ROBOTS to not read – and then 2 days later.

Can’t they get the drift that we don’t like it?

  30. I have the exact opposite problem of most people here. I have the old format and want the new one.

I have two facebooks and they’re both on my app, when Facebook was updated my one account got updated but the other stayed the same. Now I can’t figure out how to update my other account. There’s no arrow or whatever in the top corner of the page. I don’t know what to do. But it’s so annoying. Because I’m going back and forth between the two and it’s frustrating. How can I update my account?

  31. You did not say how to switch to dark mode? I hate the switch! It will not let me edit anything on my page!

  32. My Facebook app is updated but I don’t have choose layout when posting pictures. Can anyone help me?
